Chapter Eight

1

It's Sunday afternoon, the day of Diane's pizza lunch party.

After the other guests have left, Diane and Linda and I settle down in Linda's upstairs apartment. Linda rocks her nephew Marlon to sleep in her arms.

The glittery March sunlight streams through Linda's window; she puts a covering over the sleeping child's head to keep the light from his eyes, and the conversation begins.

It is I who ask the questions, and Linda who answers, because they happen to be questions she's spent a lifetime thinking over. The story she tells me—with gruff, muttered additions from Diane—is the story of what brought their family to Paris, and what brought them back again to the confines of St. Jacques, about the compromises each of Antoinette's four children made between Gypsyness and assimilation, between the modern world and tribal loyalty.
